The battle, the largest ever fought in the Western Hemisphere, was fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as part of the Gettysburg Campaign. Union Major General George G Meades Army of the Potomac decisively defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E Lees Army of Northern Virginia, ending Lees second and final invasion of the North. Casualties on both sides were extremely heavy, amounting to some 51, 000 in all.
