EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning artwork, created by the renowned German artist Michael Wolgemut in 1491, is a two-sided print featuring The Baptism of Christ on the verso (reverse side) and The Circumcision of Christ on the recto (front side). These intricately detailed illustrations were originally part of the Treasury (Schatzbehalter) of the Nuremberg City Hall in Germany. The Baptism of Christ depicts Jesus standing in the River Jordan, surrounded by four men. Saint John the Baptist, identified by his long beard and camel's hair robe, holds a cross and pours water over Jesus' head. Saint Matthew, with a book in hand, and an unidentified man look on. The scene is set by the geographical feature of an estuary, with the river Jordan winding its way through the landscape. On the other side, The Circumcision of Christ shows the infant Jesus lying on a table, while Saint John the Baptist, now dressed as a priest, performs the ritual. The scene is witnessed by two men, one of whom is believed to be Saint John the Forerunner. The artist's skillful use of light and shadow creates a dramatic effect, highlighting the importance of the moment. This artwork is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the 15th century, showcasing the Gothic style and biblical themes that were prevalent during this period. The intricate details and masterful use of line and form make this a must-see for any art enthusiast or student of religious history.
