EDITORS COMMENTS
This ancient Greek vase, created by the renowned Attic red figure painter Duris (Douris) around 490 BC, depicts Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, presiding over the voting process for the award of the arms of Achilles. The scene is believed to represent the moment when the Greeks decided to bestow the hero's armor to Odysseus before the Trojan War. The vase, now in the collection of the Art History Museum in Vienne, France, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece. The intricately painted design on the krater, or wine cooler, showcases various figures gathered around a table, engaged in a serious discussion. Athena, easily identified by her Aegis and helmet, sits majestically at the head of the table, her wise and watchful eyes surveying the scene. In her right hand, she holds a small amphora, symbolizing the power of the goddess to grant victory in battle. The scene also features other notable figures from Greek mythology, including the hero Achilles, represented by a crouching figure on the far left, and King Priam of Troy, who is shown on the right, offering a cube or die to the voter next to him. The presence of various gaming pieces, such as dice and a backgammon board, suggests that the gathering may have also served as an opportunity for the Greeks to engage in games of chance and strategy. The red figure technique, which involves painting the figures in relief against a plain background, was a popular artistic style during the late Archaic period in Attica. This masterpiece by Duris showcases the skill and artistry of ancient Greek pottery, providing valuable insights into the mythology, culture, and daily life of ancient Greece.
