EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite botanical illustration, titled "Asphodel (Asphodelus) and Rough Bellflower (Campanula trachelium)," dates back to the late 16th or early 17th century. Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II, the artwork was created by the renowned Flemish botanist and naturalist Anselmus de Boodt and his assistant Elias Verhulst. The illustration showcases two beautiful flowers native to the Low Countries: the Asphodel and the Rough Bellflower. Anselmus de Boodt, also known as Anselmus Boetius de Boodt, was a prominent figure in the scientific community during the Dutch Golden Age. He was a scholar of natural history and a prolific writer, having authored several influential works on botany and zoology. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in this illustration, which was executed using a combination of chalk, ink, and brush or pen. The Asphodel, depicted on the left, is a perennial plant with tall, slender stems and clusters of white or pink flowers. The Rough Bellflower, on the right, is characterized by its bell-shaped blue or purple flowers and rough, hairy stems. The illustration also includes intricate depictions of various insects that are attracted to these flowers. This artwork is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries, a time when natural history and botanical illustration were of great importance. The illustration is now part of the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, one of Europe's most renowned art and history museums.
