Arrival of William of Orange in England, 5 November 1688

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a pivotal moment in history - the arrival of William of Orange on the shores of England. In this dramatic scene, we witness the Protestant prince making his triumphant landing on Torbay beach on that fateful day, surrounded by his loyal soldiers and majestic horses. William's arrival marked a significant turning point for England. Invited by English notables who sought to depose the Catholic James II, he embarked upon an invasion that would later be known as the Glorious Revolution. Remarkably bloodless, this revolution forever altered the course of British history. As James II fled to France in exile, William III was crowned King of Great Britain and Ireland on April 11th, 1689. Together with his wife Mary II, they co-ruled until her untimely death in 1694. From then onwards, William became sole ruler and continued to shape the destiny of these nations. The image itself is an engraving from "The World's History" published in London in 1903. It showcases not only historical figures but also provides us with glimpses into seventeenth-century life – from ships dotting the coastline to men preparing for war. This print serves as a powerful reminder of how religious tensions can ignite revolutions and reshape entire countries. It immortalizes one man's audacious journey across treacherous waters to claim his rightful place upon a throne – forever etching King William III into history books as a symbol of change and triumph over adversity.
