Anvil Cliff, 1872. Creator: William Ludwell Sheppard
Anvil Cliff, 1872. Rock formation on the New River, Virginia, USA:the rugged, riven, and weird Anvil Cliff lifts its awful but not repulsive front....the height of which, ascertained by triangulation, is stated to be two hundred and ninety-six feet - an over-estimate, probably. The cliffs are elevated in immense laminae, and in a plane generally oblique to the stream - their color sombre gray...their summits black and riven, capped by twisted and storm-stained cedars. Mighty forest-trees are inserted between the crags...the general aspect of the scene is savage and Dantesque. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

Anvil Cliff, 1872 - A Majestic Display of Nature's Power
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print, captured by the talented William Ludwell Sheppard in 1872, showcases the awe-inspiring Anvil Cliff on the New River in Virginia, USA. The rugged and peculiar rock formation rises with an imposing yet strangely alluring presence. With a height estimated to be around 296 feet, this may have been a slight overestimation but does not diminish its grandeur. The cliffs are composed of immense layers that jut out at oblique angles to the flowing river below. Their somber gray color adds to their mystique while their summits stand starkly blackened and fractured, adorned with twisted and weather-beaten cedars. Amidst these craggy crevices lie mighty forest trees that seem almost insignificant against such colossal surroundings. The overall scene exudes a savage beauty reminiscent of Dante's infernal landscapes. Sheppard skillfully captures this wildness through his intricate wood engraving technique which brings every detail to life. This particular image is part of "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by renowned poet William Cullen Bryant. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from our heritage collection today, we are transported back in time to witness nature's raw power frozen within a single frame. It serves as a testament to both the artistic prowess of Sheppard and the timeless allure of America's natural wonders.
