EDITORS COMMENTS
Animalia Volatilia et Amphibia (Aier): Plate XXII" by Joris Hoefnagel, showcases a stunning array of birds and amphibians. Dating from around 1575-1580, this masterpiece is a testament to Hoefnagel's exceptional skill as a draftsman and his deep understanding of the natural world. The plate, which is a watercolor and gouache on vellum, is framed within an ornate gold oval border. It features a pelican in the center, a symbol of Christ's sacrifice due to its mythological habit of feeding its young with its own blood. Surrounding the pelican are various birds and amphibians, each meticulously rendered with lifelike detail and vibrant color. Hoefnagel's work was part of a larger project, "Aier," which was a series of natural history illustrations produced for the Habsburg Emperor Maximilian II. The artist traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, documenting the diverse flora and fauna he encountered. This plate is a remarkable example of the European artistic tradition of natural history illustration during the Renaissance. It is a valuable addition to any collection of heritage art, literature, or natural history, and a testament to the enduring beauty and importance of the natural world." Location: National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., USA.
