EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin, a prominent French politician of the 19th century. Taken in 1875, this black and white portrait captures Ledru-Rollin's commanding presence as he gazes directly into the camera. Known for his role as one of the Executive Commissioners during the Government of France in May and June 1848, Ledru-Rollin played a significant part in shaping the Second Republic. However, his political journey was not without its challenges. Accused of leading an insurrection in 1849, which he vehemently denied as a peaceful demonstration, Ledru-Rollin was forced into exile. It wasn't until 1871 that he finally returned to France. The engraving beautifully portrays Ledru-Rollin's determination and resilience through its intricate details and monochrome aesthetic. As a statesman and leader, he left an indelible mark on French politics during a time marked by revolution and rebellion. This historic photograph is sourced from The Illustrated London News dated January 16th, 1875. Its creator remains unknown but has managed to capture both the essence of Alexandre Auguste Ledru-Rollin's character and the spirit of an era defined by political upheaval. A true testament to his enduring legacy as a key figure in French history.
