Alexander Kerensky, Prime Minister of the Russian Provisional Government, Russia, 1917
Alexander Kerensky, Prime Minister of the Russian Provisional Government, in his office in the Winter Palace in Petrograd (St Petersburg), Russia, 1917. Kerensky Kerensky (1881-1970) was one of the most prominent leaders of the February Revolution in Russia in 1917, which led to the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II. In the Provisional Government established after the revolution, he held the posts of Minister for Justice, then Minister for War, and, from July, Prime Minister. After a failed coup attempt led by General Kornilov in August, he also appointed himself commander-in-chief. The Provisional Government was unstable however, and Kerenskys refusal to pull Russia out of the First World War and his distribution of weapons to the Petrograd workers during Kornilovs coup brought about its downfall. The October Revolution brought the Bolsheviks to power and Kerensky was forced to flee into exile. He lived in France until 1940, from where he was forced to flee again, to the USA, when the Germans invaded in World War II. Found in the collection of the State Museum of the Political History of Russia, St. Petersburg

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Alexander Kerensky, the Prime Minister of the Russian Provisional Government, in his office at the Winter Palace in Petrograd (St Petersburg) during 1917. A prominent leader of the February Revolution, Kerensky played a pivotal role in Tsar Nicholas II's abdication. In the aftermath of this historic event, he assumed various positions within the Provisional Government, including Minister for Justice and Minister for War before becoming Prime Minister in July. However, Kerensky's tenure was marked by instability and challenges. Following General Kornilov's failed coup attempt in August, he took on additional responsibilities as commander-in-chief. The distribution of weapons to Petrograd workers during this period further strained his leadership amidst an already fragile government. Ultimately, it was Kerensky's refusal to withdraw Russia from World War I that led to his downfall. The October Revolution saw the rise of Bolshevik power and forced him into exile. Initially residing in France until 1940 when Germany invaded during World War II, he sought refuge once again—this time finding solace in the United States. Preserved within the collection of St Petersburg's State Museum of Political History of Russia today, this print serves as a poignant reminder of a significant figure whose political journey witnessed both triumphs and tribulations amid one of history's most transformative periods.
