The Alabaster Sphinx, Cairo, Egypt, c1920s

The Alabaster Sphinx, Cairo, Egypt, c1920s. The Alabaster Sphinx was carved in honour of an unknown Pharaoh, probably during the eighteenth dynasty (between 1700 and 1400 BC). Although the sphinx does not bear an inscription, the facial features suggest that it was built in honour of Hatshepsut, Amenhotep II or Amenhotep III. Plate taken From In the Land of the Pharaohs, published by Lehnert & Landrock (Cairo)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Alabaster Sphinx, a timeless symbol of ancient Egyptian civilization. Carved during the eighteenth dynasty, between 1700 and 1400 BC, this enigmatic masterpiece was dedicated to an unknown Pharaoh. While lacking inscriptions, its facial features suggest it may have been created in honor of influential rulers such as Hatshepsut, Amenhotep II or Amenhotep III. The image captures the serene beauty of Cairo's landscape in the 1920s. The sphinx stands proudly amidst a lush thicket, surrounded by grazing goats and sheep. This harmonious scene reflects the symbiotic relationship between nature and animals that has endured for centuries in this historic land. Taken from "In the Land of the Pharaohs" a publication by Lehnert & Landrock, this photograph transports us back to a time when Egypt's rich history was being rediscovered by explorers and adventurers alike. The monochrome composition adds depth and mystery to the image, emphasizing both its antiquity and enduring allure. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, we are reminded of our connection to those who came before us – their artistry, spirituality, and reverence for nature. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity throughout history while inviting us to explore further into Egypt's fascinating past.
