EDITORS COMMENTS
Act Eight: Journey, published in 1854, is a captivating woodblock print by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi. This print is a scene from the classic Japanese drama "Kanadehon Chushingura," also known as "The Treasury of Loyal Retainers" or "The Revenge of the Loyal Retainers." The story follows the forty-seven ronin, a group of loyal samurai who avenged their master's death by committing seppuku (ritual suicide) and then carrying out a plan to take revenge on their master's killer. In this particular scene, titled "Journey," we see a group of men and women, dressed in beautiful Edo Period clothing, preparing for their journey. The men carry shoulder poles, while the women wear elegant kimonos adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. The coastal landscape in the background adds to the sense of adventure and anticipation. The figures in the print are arranged in a dynamic composition, with some seated and speaking, while others are standing and preparing to depart. The use of color and shading adds depth and texture to the print, making it a stunning example of the woodblock printing technique. This print is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Tokugawa Period (1603-1868). It showcases the beauty of Japanese apparel, the natural landscapes of the country, and the compelling storytelling tradition of Japanese drama. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is fortunate to have this print in its collection, allowing us to appreciate the artistry and historical significance of Utagawa Kuniyoshi's work.
