"A Fete Champetre" painted by Watteau, 1857. Engraving of a painting. In the foreground a gentleman is entreating a lady to take up the tambourine and accompany him in a duet. On the left is a calm and placid pair of lovers, too tranquil to be demonstrative, but the lady giving an indolent instinctive imitation of the game at which her friend and the masqued cavalier have been playing. The latter is endeavouring to exact a forfeiture, which the young lady is in too high spirits to yield to her unknown persecutor. The central figure, that of the Pierrot, who stands in an easy attitude, and is rallying the calm couple upon their love-birdishness is wanted where it is, or one would wonder why he does not let the lovers alone, and come round and talk to the handsome girl on the grass to the left. They are all happy - exuberantly, mildly, or sentimentally happy'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating painting by the renowned French artist, Antoine Watteau, created in 1857. The title translates to "A Rustic Feast," and this masterpiece is a visual representation of the joy and merriment of the French aristocracy during the Rococo period. In the foreground of the painting, a gentleman is earnestly requesting a lady to join him in a musical duet, holding out a tambourine. To the left, a serene couple, lost in their own world, exchange glances and subtle gestures, the lady playfully mimicking the game that her friend and the masked cavalier have been engaged in. The cavalier, in an attempt to extract a forfeit, persistently urges the young lady, who is in high spirits and unwilling to comply with his demands. At the center of the scene, the figure of Pierrot, dressed in white with a red cap, stands in a relaxed position, encouraging the calm couple to lighten up and join in the festivities. His presence adds a sense of whimsy and playfulness to the scene, as he rallies the couple for their reserved demeanor. The overall mood of the painting is one of happiness, expressed through the exuberance of some, the tranquility of others, and the sentimental longing of the Pierrot figure. The painting is a visual testament to the joy and merriment of the French aristocracy during the Rococo period, and a beautiful example of Watteau's mastery of color, composition, and emotion.
