EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a 10c Washington reproduction plate proof on a card sheet of fifty, dating back to 1891. A remarkable piece of American history, this item has been handstamped multiple times with a blue oval mark that reads "Bureau Eng. & Pri g, Jan. 22,1891, Specimen". During the late 19th century, the Post Office Department sought to eliminate the practice of distributing regular stamps as gifts or samples for postage purposes. To achieve this goal, they began printing sample stamps on sturdy card stock in 1879. These samples were then enclosed in small envelopes and presented to dignitaries. The popularity of these sample stamps led to five reprints being ordered by the Post Office Department between 1879 and 1894. This particular reproduction is one of those cherished reprints. The image depicts General George Washington himself - an esteemed founding father and first President of the United States - captured in intricate detail through engraved ink work. The presence of military symbolism adds depth to this political portrait. Displayed at the National Postal Museum today, this stunning piece represents not only a significant milestone in postal service history but also serves as a testament to America's rich heritage and its commitment to communication and education throughout centuries past. As we admire this meticulously produced plate proof with its repetitive design elements, it reminds us how far our scientific institutions have come since then while honoring our nation's enduring legacy.
