EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created by Ivan Dem'ianovich Bulychev in the 1850s, presents two intriguing figures from his journey across Eastern Siberia and Kamchatka. The image, titled "Resident of the Settlement of Oliutorskii" and "Tungus Vagrant," offers a glimpse into the lives of people from different ethnic backgrounds during this era. The Resident, dressed in traditional Russian clothing, wears a long, double-breasted coat with a high collar and a fur hat. His attire signifies his status as a settled agricultural laborer, likely involved in farming or livestock rearing. The Tungus Vagrant, on the other hand, is depicted wearing a simple, loose-fitting garment, with no collar or headwear. His appearance suggests a nomadic lifestyle, possibly as a hunter or gatherer from the Tungus ethnic group. Bulychev's meticulously drawn illustration offers an ethnographic and anthropological perspective of the people he encountered during his expedition. The image is a testament to the rich cultural diversity of the Russian Far East during the 19th century. The chromolithograph is part of a larger collection of 64 illustrations in Bulychev's album, "A journey across eastern Siberia: Part 1, Trip to Kamchatka," which documents various aspects of life in the region, including towns, cities, monasteries, landscapes, and the people of different ethnic groups. This evocative image invites us to reflect on the lives of these two individuals and the vast, diverse world that Bulychev encountered during his travels. The chromolithograph is a valuable historical record and an important contribution to the heritage of art and ethnology.
