Suleyman the Magnificent, also known as Suleiman the Lawgiver and Suleiman the First, was a prominent figure in Turkish history. Born in 1494, he became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1520 and ruled until his death in 1566. His reign is often referred to as a golden age for Turkey. One of Suleyman's notable achievements was his architectural legacy. He commissioned several magnificent structures that still stand today, such as the Sehzade Mosque and Selim I Mosque in Constantinople (now Istanbul). These mosques showcase intricate designs and exquisite craftsmanship that reflect the grandeur of Ottoman architecture. Another iconic landmark associated with the Mausoleum of Roxela located in Istanbul. This mausoleum serves as a testament to his love for his wife Khurrem, who played an influential role during his reign. The mausoleum stands tall, symbolizing their eternal bond. Suleymaniye I Mausoleum is another significant structure built by Suleyman. It represents both religious devotion and imperial power with its impressive domes and minarets dominating Constantinople's skyline. Apart from being an avid patron of art and architecture, Suleyman was also a skilled military strategist. He led numerous successful campaigns against neighboring territories like Hungary. The Battle of Mohacs in 1526 showcased his tactical brilliance when facing Hungarian forces. However, not all aspects of Suleyman's rule were positive. His relationship with his Grand Vizier Ilderim was strained at times, leading to conflicts within the empire itself. In one instance captured by an American line engraving from 1901, we see Khurrem demanding that her husband put Ilderim to death – highlighting both political intrigue and personal drama within royal circles.
