The sea slater, scientifically known as Ligia oceanica, is a fascinating creature that can be found along the shores of various coastal regions. This peculiar marine isopod has captured the attention of naturalists and enthusiasts alike since its discovery in the early 19th century. In 1833-39, a beautifully colored engraving depicting an Ichtyosaurus was created, capturing the imagination of those who laid eyes upon it. Amongst this illustration were inset pictures showcasing other intriguing marine organisms such as the sea mat, sea slater, mussel, and sea anemones. Venturing to Broad Bench in Kimmeridge Bay on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset offers a chance to witness these adult sea slaters thriving under driftwood on the strandline. Their presence adds charm to this picturesque location where a young boy can be seen fishing from his boat in the nearby harbor. But it's not just Kimmeridge Bay that provides habitat for these remarkable creatures. Studland Bay also serves as home to another species of isopod called Idotea linearis. These adults seek refuge amongst eelgrass on sandy seabeds, creating a harmonious ecosystem beneath our oceans' surface. In captivity lies yet another captivating sight: Pelagic Isopods like Idotea metallica coexist with Goose Barnacles (Pedunculata sp. ), forming an intricate dance within their confined environment. Returning to nature's embrace brings us back to Ligia oceanica once again. On rocky shorelines near Polperro in South Cornwall during August or even at Kimmeridge's seawall during October, one can spot these adult sea slaters clinging onto rocks adorned with barnacles. Their resilience and adaptability are truly awe-inspiring. As we explore seashores across the United Kingdom, let us not forget about these humble yet extraordinary creatures -the Sea Slater- which play their part in maintaining the delicate balance of our coastal ecosystems.
