Salvelinus, a diverse genus of freshwater fish in the Salmon family, encompasses various species with unique characteristics and habitats. One such species is the Speckled Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis), also known as Brook Trout. With its vibrant colors and distinctive markings, this beautiful fish thrives in freshwater streams and rivers. Another fascinating member of the Salvelinus genus is the Splake (Salvelinus namaycush X Salvelinus fontinalis). This hybrid fish results from a cross between a female lake trout and a male brook trout. The Splake inherits traits from both parent species, making it an intriguing specimen for researchers and anglers alike. The Arctic Char (Salvelinus alpinus) is another notable member of the Salvelinus family. Adapted to cold environments, this resilient fish can be found in arctic regions across North America, Europe, and Asia. Its subspecies include Alpine Char (Salvelinus alpinus alpinus) which inhabits high-altitude lakes. Sea trout, charrs, and fishing methods are also associated with Salvelinus species. These versatile fishes have captivated fishermen worldwide due to their elusive nature and challenging catchability. Historical illustrations by Edward Donovan depict some members of the Salvelinus genus dating back to 1802-1808. These handcolored copperplate engravings showcase Arctic char (Alpine salmon) as well as Arctic charr (Salmo salvenilus), providing valuable insights into their appearance during that era. In addition to these specific examples mentioned above, there are other European freshwater fish within the Salveinlus genus including Whitefishes, chars like Danube salmon or grayling.
