Step back in time and explore the rich history of Sainte Foy, a sacred site rooted in both European and Canadian heritage. The Church of St. Foy, begun around 1050 by Abbot Odolric, stands as a testament to the region's ancient past (photo). In France, the church's stunning architecture and intricate details inspired artists like Ingres, who depicted Clarisse Sainte-Foy as Denise in his painting "Les Deux Gentilhommes" (1844). But the name Sainte Foy is not only linked to the Church. It also echoes the battlefields of the past, such as the Battle in 1063, where the combined forces of the Counts of Toulouse and Carcassonne defeated the invading Saracens (photo). Fast forward to the 18th century, and the name resurfaced during the French and Indian War, with the Battle in 1760, where the French attempted to recapture Quebec from the British (map). Today, the Church of St. Foy in Conques (12th century) continues to draw visitors from around the world, who come to marvel at its beauty and the rich tapestry of history it represents. From its humble beginnings as a place of worship to its role in pivotal battles, Sainte Foy remains an enduring symbol of the past and a beacon of faith.
