In this captivating portrait by Mattheus de Haan, the right hand of the Governor-General of Dutch East Indies takes center stage. The hand, adorned with intricate rings and delicate lace cuffs, exudes power and authority, and is a symbol of leadership and control in a distant land. As we shift our gaze to "The Peacocks Skirt, " an exquisite piece of artistry, we notice the artist's meticulous attention to detail in depicting every feather on the majestic bird's plumage. Yet it is the right hand that holds the brush, guiding each stroke with precision and skill. Moving through time, we stumble upon "St Jerome's Commentary on the Prophet Amos (Fragment). " The aged manuscript reveals fragments of wisdom from centuries past. Amongst its pages lies an illustration - a depiction of St Jerome himself deep in thought, his right hand poised above his quill pen as he contemplates his next words. Flipping further into history, Justinian's Codex comes into view. Book V. XXXVIII contains laws that shaped empires. And there it is again - the right hand holding open this ancient text for scholars to study and interpret. An unidentified fragment piques our curiosity as we wonder about its origin and purpose. Could it be another testament to human ingenuity guided by skilled hands? "Vanishing London" captures moments frozen in time; buildings once bustling now reduced to rubble. Amidst this urban decay stands a worker wearing gloves on their right hand – a reminder that even amidst destruction, hope remains alive through diligent labor. Zooming forward into modernity, two Citroen Light Fifteens catch our eye – LBC649 proudly displayed on their license plates. These sleek automobiles are masterpieces crafted by skilled engineers who relied heavily on their dominant right hands throughout production. A glimpse at another fragment reveals part of a Missal - prayers whispered softly during sacred ceremonies where priests' hands guide the faithful through rituals and blessings.
