Richard Bernard Godfrey was a prominent figure in Kent, known for his extensive connections to various historical sites and estates. Born and raised in Langley Park, near Beckenham in Kent, he developed a deep appreciation for the county's rich history from an early age. Inspired by Edward Hasted's writings on local history, Godfrey embarked on a journey to explore and preserve the heritage of Kent. One of his notable endeavors was at Knole, near Sevenoaks, where he dedicated himself to restoring this former palace belonging to the Archbishop. With meticulous attention to detail, Godfrey ensured that its grandeur was revived for generations to come. Bradborne also captured Godfrey's interest as he delved into its past through Hasted's historical accounts. His passion led him to contribute significantly towards preserving Bradborne's unique charm and historical significance. Hever Castle became another jewel in Godfrey's crown as he immersed himself in its captivating history. Drawing inspiration from Hasted once again, he worked tirelessly alongside preservation societies to maintain Hever Castle’s allure as one of Kent’s most iconic landmarks. Godfrey had an insatiable curiosity about antiquities discovered within Crock-field near Newington. Fascinated by their stories and origins, he meticulously documented these findings with great enthusiasm. Leeds Castle held a special place in Richard Bernard Godfrey’s heart; it captivated him with its enchanting beauty and storied past. Through his dedication and support over many years, Leeds Castle flourished under his guidance. Tunbridge Castle also benefited from Godfrey’s love for historic sites. Inspired by Hasted’s work yet again, he played an instrumental role in preserving Tunbridge Castle's architectural marvels while ensuring visitors could appreciate its rich heritage firsthand. Preston Hall in Aylesford found itself fortunate enough to receive Richard Bernard Godfrey’s attention too. Recognizing the hall's cultural importance within the county of Kent, he worked diligently to maintain its splendor and historical significance.
