The psalter, a cherished book of prayers and hymns, holds within its pages a wealth of history and artistry. Princess Elizabeth, later Queen, was intimately acquainted with this sacred text in the year 1547. The Luttrell Psalter from the 14th century showcases a blocked cart being pulled by an unknown force, leaving us to ponder its mysterious meaning. A glimpse into Canterbury Cathedral can be found in the Eadwine Psalter from around 1150, offering us a visual representation of this magnificent structure on vellum. Scenes from Genesis come alive through illuminations in an English Psalter - witness the creation of Eve and the fall and expulsion from paradise depicted with exquisite detail. Traveling back to the year 1370, we find ourselves immersed in the Egerton Bohun Psalter-Hours; each page tells stories through intricate illustrations that transport us to another time. Basil II, Byzantine emperor during 976-1025 AD is also associated with a psalter - his influence extending far beyond his reign. Fragments of various psalters have been discovered throughout history - remnants that offer glimpses into their former glory. From stickado wooden psalters adorned with rosaries and bones to depictions of Jesus crucified on C14 manuscripts or MS Crucifixion scenes; these fragments remind us of their enduring significance. Intriguingly diverse yet united by their devotion to prayer and praise, these references shed light on the profound impact that psalters have had across centuries. They serve as testaments not only to religious practices but also as windows into artistic expression and cultural heritage that continue to captivate our imagination today.
