Plinths: A Journey Through Time and Art Step into the ancient world of Greece, specifically Attica and Athens, where plinths played a significant role in showcasing majestic statues. One such plinth held the Statue of Athena at the Academy of Arts, symbolizing wisdom and strength. Moving forward to more modern times, it also served as platforms for military aircraft. The North American F-86L Sabre 52-4256 and Boeing B-47E Stratojet 53-4213 stood tall on their respective plinths, representing technological advancements in aviation. Returning to Athens, another remarkable statue found its place on a plinth at the Academy of Arts - the Statue of Apollo. This magnificent artwork embodied beauty and artistic excellence. Venturing further into Athens' historical landscape brings us to The Agora, where statues once adorned its facade. These sculptures proudly stood along this former structure's frontage, capturing glimpses of ancient life frozen in time. Shifting our focus from Greece but still embracing artistry is an exquisite view captured from one of the Exedra. This vantage point reveals an enchanting Orange Tree Garden with a temple portico painted delicately using pen & ink and watercolors on paper. Delving deeper into history takes us back to approximately 1770 when a pair made from white marble, porphyry & ormolu were crafted with utmost precision. These elegant pieces showcased skilled craftsmanship that has endured through centuries. Intriguingly enough, we encounter Rhodopis once again - this time immortalized as a life-size figure standing atop her own marble plinth since 1862. Her presence evokes curiosity about her story within Greek mythology or perhaps even real-life inspiration behind her creation. Not far away stands Louis XIV astride his horse upon yet another impressive bronze sculpture mounted on a wooden base dating between 1875-99.
