Pieter Both was a Dutch navigator and explorer who played a significant role in the early exploration of Mauritius. Born in the Netherlands in 1568, Both embarked on several voyages to the East Indies, where he eventually became involved in the Dutch East India Company. In 1615, Both captained an expedition to explore and chart the waters around Mauritius. During this voyage, he discovered and named several islands in the region, including Rodrigues Island.
