"Unveiling the Hypocrisy: The Pharisees in Art" The Pharisees, a prominent Jewish sect during Jesus' time, have been depicted throughout history as both adversaries and catalysts for pivotal events. In "The Adulteress Brought Before Christ, " an oil on canvas masterpiece from c. 1508-10, we witness their attempt to trap Jesus by presenting a woman caught in adultery. However, their malicious intentions are exposed when Christ challenges them with his wisdom and compassion. In another vellum artwork titled "Fol. 86r The Pharisees forbid a man to move his bed on the Sabbath, " we see the strict adherence of these religious leaders to laws and traditions. Their rigid interpretation often overshadowed mercy and understanding. Contrasting this image is "Fol. 70r Then Divine Signs Will Appear, in the Sun, and in the Stars, and the Son of Man Will Appear with Glorious Strength. " Here, it is prophesied that divine signs will manifest themselves before the coming of the Son of Man – perhaps urging even the Pharisees to reflect upon their actions. "Fol. 96r The high priests and the Pharisees propose to kill Christ" sheds light on one of history's most significant betrayals - when these influential figures conspired against Jesus out of fear or jealousy. Artists also captured moments where Jesus engaged directly with Pharisaic authority figures like St John Baptist did in "St John Baptist Preaches to the Pharisees. " This painting showcases John's courage as he confronts them about righteousness while staying true to his mission. "The Woman Taken in Adultery" by 1653 portrays yet another encounter between Jesus and a woman accused of adultery – an event where he challenged not only her accusers but also societal norms upheld by those like pharisiens who were quick to judge without considering forgiveness or redemption.
