Nishimura Shigenobu was a renowned creator and artist during the 18th century. His works encompassed various forms of art, including plays and paintings. One notable play he created was "Shochikubai Kongen Soga, " performed in 1732, featuring the talented actor Segawa Kikujiro I as Oshichi. Another production from the same year showcased Segawa Kikujiro I as Oshichi alongside Sanjo Kantaro II as Kichisaburo. In addition to his theatrical contributions, Shigenobu also excelled in painting. One of his famous pieces is "Hollyhocks and Peacocks (Aoi ni kujaku), " dating back to the early 1730s. This artwork showcases his mastery of capturing nature's beauty with vibrant colors and intricate details. Shigenobu's talent extended beyond theater and nature scenes; he also depicted everyday life through his artistry. In one piece titled "Peddler of Flowers of the Four Seasons - A Set of Three (Shiki no hanauri sanpukutsui), " he portrays a flower vendor selling blossoms that represent each season. Furthermore, Shigenobu demonstrated his skill in portraying women's elegance through artworks like "Beauty Carrying a Wedding Decoration" from around 1735 and "Ono no Komachi" from a set called "Three Beauties. " These pieces showcase graceful figures adorned with elaborate costumes, reflecting both traditional Japanese aesthetics and Shigenobu's artistic vision. Not limited to human subjects alone, Shigenobu also captured scenes depicting architectural beauty such as "The House of Umegawa. " Through this artwork, viewers can appreciate not only the exquisite architecture but also gain insights into historical Japanese culture. One cannot overlook Shigenobu's ability to depict actors on stage or offstage moments within their roles.
