The NAACP, or the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, has been at the forefront of fighting for civil rights in America. In this historic photograph from May 17, 1954, we see three influential NAACP attorneys - George E. C. Hayes, Thurgood Marshall, and James Nabrit Jr. - celebrating their victory in the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education case at the Supreme Court in Washington, D. C. This ruling declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. Warren K. Leffler captured an iconic image of Thurgood Marshall in 1963 while he served as Executive Secretary of the NAACP. Marshall was a prominent American civil rights leader who played a crucial role in dismantling legal segregation. The NAACP offices have long been a hub for organizing and advocating for equal rights and justice for African Americans. These spaces have witnessed countless meetings and strategizing sessions that shaped history. Mary Church Terrell is another significant figure associated with the fight against racial discrimination during her time as an activist around 1910. Walter White served as executive secretary of the NAACP during a critical period from 1931 to 1955 when racial tensions were high across America due to systemic racism and Jim Crow laws enforced by many states. Leaders such as Henry L. Moon, Roy Wilkins, Herbert Hill, and Thurgood Marshall continued to carry on the mission of advancing civil rights through their work with the NAACP in 1956. One notable jurist associated with the organization is seen here photographed by Thomas O Halloran on September 17th, 1957: Thurgood Marshall made history when he became not only one of its most prominent lawyers but also later became a Justice on the United States Supreme Court. In c1962 photo captures a school bus adorned with signs promoting an NAACP voter registration drive—a testament to their ongoing efforts to ensure equal voting rights for all.
