William Henry Edwards, a dedicated lepidopterist of the 1870s and 1880s, captured in this portrait, was known for his significant contributions to the field of butterfly studies. Joining him in the quest for knowledge was Jean Baptiste Boisduval, a French lepidopterist and botanist, whose black and white image reflects the seriousness of their passion. Armed with butterfly collectors' tools, they delicately captured these beautiful creatures, such as the Blue Morpho, in their natural habitats. From the vibrant Blue Morpho on a flower to a butterfly sipping nectar, each moment was cherished. Edouard Francois Andre, another intrepid explorer, is seen here in Villavicencio, Venezuela, carefully catching a butterfly. Even the larvae and pupae, often overlooked, were meticulously studied by Margaret Fountaine at the Butterfly Farm on St. Martin. Their dedication and curiosity continue to inspire new generations of lepidopterists, preserving the wonder and beauty of these fascinating creatures.
