EDITORS COMMENTS

Jute, a versatile and resilient fiber, has played a significant role in the history of Dundee. Murraygate, once bustling with activity, stands as a testament to the city's celebration of the jute industry. Advertisements for Baxter Brothers & Co proudly showcased their contribution to this thriving trade in Scotland. Scotlands Industrial Souvenir captures the essence of an era when jute was at its peak. In 1969, Hilltown witnessed firsthand the work in progress as men skillfully weaved jute straws into intricate patterns. But let us not forget that jute is more than just an industrial material; it has deep roots in nature too. Derived from Jews mallow or Corchorus olitorius, this plant holds immense significance both historically and botanically. The Burial of King Ethelbert of Kent depicted in sepia photographs takes us back to ancient times when even royalty recognized the value of jute. The lithographic illustrations from The Church of England: A History for the People transport us further into history's embrace. Beyond Dundee's borders, jute found its way across continents and cultures. Lion with Palms (Rug), created between 1890-1900 in Ohio by an unknown artist showcases how this humble fiber transcended boundaries and became part of everyday life. Traveling even further back in time to 19th-century Democratic Republic of Congo reveals yet another facet - a pendant crafted using jute by unknown hands reflects its global appeal and versatility. And finally, we cannot overlook Jutes' historical significance as seen through The Landing of the Jutes at Isle Thanet illustration dating back to 449 AD - evidence that this remarkable fiber shaped civilizations long before modern industries emerged. Whether celebrated on murals lining Murraygate or woven into rugs and pendants across different cultures and eras, one thing remains clear: Jute's impact spans centuries and continents, leaving an indelible mark on the world's history.
