John (1859-1914) was a prominent figure in French politics during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was known for his involvement in various significant events and movements of his time. One of the illustrations that captured John's influence was Henri Gousse's depiction of him in Le Rire, showcasing his participation in the fashionable sport scene. This highlighted John's ability to adapt to changing times and engage with popular culture. Another notable moment in John's life was his role in the Dreyfus case, which had a profound impact on French society. The cartoon from 1898 depicted supporters of both Dreyfus and the separation of church and state, emphasizing their ideas such as "atheism" and "impiety. " John stood firmly with those advocating for justice, alongside figures like Clemenceau George, Jaures Jean, Briand Aristide, and Brisson Henri. However, not all moments were positive for John. In January 1898 at the Chamber of Deputies, he faced physical violence when depute Francois Pierres de Bernis struck him after urging socialist groups to join the dreyfusard camp. This incident showcased both John's determination to fight for what he believed in but also exposed the hostility surrounding political debates during that era. Tragically, John met an untimely end with his assassination on August 1st, 1914 - just before Europe plunged into irreparable conflict. The cover of L'Action newspaper captured this somber moment as it reported on Kaiser Wilhelm II declaring a state of siege in Germany. Throughout his career, whether through satirical magazines like Le Lire or royalist publications like Le Panache illustrated by Guydo or Moloch respectively - artists consistently portrayed John as a central figure engaging with important issues such as socialism or royalism.
