Hyacinthe Rigaud, a renowned French painter of the 17th and 18th centuries, was known for his exceptional talent in capturing the essence and grandeur of his subjects. Born in Perpignan, France in 1659, Rigaud's artistic abilities were recognized at an early age. Under the guidance of Charles Le Brun, one of the most prominent artists of his time, Rigaud honed his skills and developed a distinctive style that would make him famous throughout Europe. His attention to detail and ability to convey personality through portraiture earned him numerous prestigious commissions. One such commission was from Jules Hardouin Mansart in 1704. Gerard Edelinck beautifully engraved this portrait showcasing Rigaud's mastery over capturing likeness and character. Another notable engraving by Edelinck is that of Charles d'Hozier, Kings Genealogist in 1691. Rigaud's self-portrait painted around 1705 showcases not only his technical prowess but also gives us a glimpse into the artist himself. The oil on canvas masterpiece can be found at Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. In addition to painting portraits of nobility and influential figures like Martin Vanden Bogaert Desjardins and Melchior de Polignac (a French cardinal), Rigaud also depicted individuals from various walks of life. One such example is "The Threatener, " an intriguing portrayal of an unknown woman with intensity emanating from her gaze. Rigaud's work extended beyond traditional portraiture as seen in "Portrait of Samuel Bernard. " This engraving by Drevet captures both the subject's physical appearance as well as their inner essence - a testament to Rigaud's ability to breathe life into his art. Lastly, we have "Portrait of a Sculptor, " believed to be Robert Le Lorrain.
