The Habsburg-Valois Wars were a series of conflicts that took place between the powerful Habsburg dynasty and the Valois dynasty in the 16th century. These wars were characterized by intense rivalries, territorial disputes, and power struggles for dominance over Europe. One significant event during these wars was the Battle of Pavia in 1525. In this battle, Francois I of France faced off against Charles de Lannoy, a commander under Charles V. The engraving from 1897 depicts an iconic moment when Francois I surrenders his sword to Charles de Lannoy, symbolizing his defeat. Another depiction of the Battle of Pavia can be seen in a tapestry from 1525-31. This artwork captures the intensity and chaos of the battle as soldiers clash on the battlefield. The Italian Wars also played a crucial role in these conflicts. The drawing by Master De La Ratiere showcases "The Battle of Marignan" which occurred on September 14, 1515. It portrays French troops engaged in combat against their opponents. Francis I's involvement is highlighted further with chromolitho depicting him at the Battle of Marignano in 1515. This image brings to life his presence on the battlefield as he leads his troops into action. During The Second Italian War of Independence, we see The Regiment of Guides making their way through Piedmont via Mont Cenis Pass in an effort to reach their destination and engage with enemy forces. In another scene from this tumultuous period, Zouaves are shown embarking at Marseilles en route to participate in the Battle of Palestro. Their determination and readiness for battle are evident as they prepare themselves for what lies ahead. Moving forward chronologically, we come across an engraved depiction titled "The Revolt of Pavia" from May 1796 during Sixth Italian War (1521-1526).
