In the ancient Roman Empire, Titus, a renowned emperor from 39-81 AD, is immortalized in a magnificent marble bust. His stern expression reveals a slight frown, perhaps reflecting the weight of his responsibilities and the challenges he faced during his reign. Transporting us to a bustling Roman Osteria in 1866, Carl Heinrich Bloch's painting captures the essence of daily life. Amongst lively conversations and clinking glasses, one figure stands out - Ethel Parkinson. With her disapproving gaze and furrowed brow, she seems to be frowning upon some unruly behavior unfolding before her eyes. Even in aviation history, we find frowning faces. The Bristol M1C aircraft was frowned upon by officialdom due to its incredible speed capabilities. This fast singularity challenged traditional notions and pushed boundaries that made some uncomfortable. However, not all instances of "frowned" carry negative connotations. In "The Procession of Good Humor, " depicted through vibrant color lithography, smiles abound as people celebrate joyously together. In contrast to these lighter scenes lies an engraving called "The Apparitor of the Secret Tribunal. " Here we witness a man who hides his pipe while wearing a deep scowl on his face as he speaks sternly—his frown serving as both warning and intimidation within this secretive realm.
