Their vigilant efforts ensured that illegal items were intercepted before they could enter the country. Traveling back to the 18th century, we delve into the realm of taxation. Governments imposed excise duties on various commodities as a means to generate revenue. These taxes played a significant role in shaping societies and funding public services. Customs procedures during the 19th century were crucial for regulating trade between nations. The meticulous inspection of goods at borders ensured compliance with import/export regulations while safeguarding national interests. The year 1774 witnessed an infamous event known as "The Bostonians Paying the Exciseman. " In this lithograph, enraged citizens tarred and feathered a tax collector who symbolized British authority imposing unjust taxes on American colonies. Continuing our exploration of this historical incident, another lithograph depicts Boston patriots forcefully pouring British tea onto a tax collector who had suffered tarring and feathering in 1773.
