Eriophyidae: The Tiny Terrorizers of Fruit and Forests 🌳🍐 Springtime brings a hidden threat to pear trees and grapevines: the pear leaf blister mite (Eriophyes pyri) and grape blister mite (Colomerus vitis). These microscopic mites cause distinct red blisters on pear foliage and flower peduncles, while on grapevines, they create white damage blisters on the lower surface of leaves. In France, the grape blister mite also leaves telltale blisters on the upper leaf surface. Gall mites, like Aceria pseudoplatani on sycamore leaves, also join the ranks of Eriophyidae, forming colonies on the underside of leaves and causing galls. Meanwhile, the Lime Nail-gall Mite (Eriophyes tiliae) grows distinctive galls from the surface of lime leaves. Keep an eye out for these tiny pests during your next nature walk or garden visit.
