Edouard Taurel, a renowned artist from the 19th century, left an indelible mark on the art world with his diverse range of works. Born in 1832 and passing away in 1880, Taurel's artistic prowess was evident through his various masterpieces. One of his notable creations was "Bacchus, " a captivating portrayal of the Roman god of wine. With meticulous attention to detail, Taurel captured Bacchus' essence, showcasing his jovial nature and love for revelry. In another piece titled "Pride (Superbia), " created in collaboration with Franco Estius in 1834 - 1880, Taurel delved into the concept of pride. Through intricate brushstrokes and vivid colors, he depicted the complexities associated with this human emotion. Taurel's talent extended beyond traditional paintings as seen in "Cat and three barking dogs and a dish. " This artwork commissioned by the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts showcased his versatility as he portrayed animals with lifelike precision. His ability to recreate historical scenes is exemplified through "Ensign, " where he collaborated with Frans Hals and Pieter Codde in 1874. This collaborative effort brought forth a dynamic depiction of military life during that era. Another remarkable work by Taurel was his interpretation of Rembrandt's iconic painting "Frans Banninck Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch. " With great skill, he paid homage to Rembrandt while adding his own unique touch to this timeless masterpiece. Taurel also ventured into sculpting as evidenced by "Stork with babies for a house door" created alongside J. H. Laarman between 1846 -1892. This sculpture adorned many homes' entrances, symbolizing fertility and protection within families. Portraiture became one of Taurel's specialties, capturing the essence of his subjects.
