The majestic Black Woodpecker male (Dryocopus martius) is a stunning sight in the snowy landscapes of Finland. In February, this striking bird can be spotted perched on a tree trunk, its red crown contrasting beautifully against the white backdrop. Sometimes, territorial disputes arise between two males, leading to intense encounters on tree trunks. In January, a branch was removed from one of their favorite spots, revealing the resilience and adaptability of these woodpeckers. They continue to thrive even in challenging conditions. In December, a male and female were captured at their nesthole in Germany, showcasing their dedication as parents. Hoar frost-covered trees provide an enchanting setting for these birds as they perch on tree trunks with utmost grace. The Danube Delta in Romania becomes home to them during May when they are seen near their nest hole. Not only do they inhabit forests but also venture near water bodies like Pusztaszer in Hungary where they can be observed gracefully navigating through aquatic environments. Even females join in the pecking action as they search for food or create nesting spaces. These captivating moments have been immortalized through lithographs published back in 1897 and manuscripts dating back to 1810-17 that depict the Great Black Woodpecker's beauty and significance throughout history. Dryocopus martius truly captivates with its resilience, elegance, and importance within European ecosystems - an awe-inspiring species deserving admiration and protection.
