" Inside his cozy establishment, mandarins gather around a table, engrossed in a game somewhat similar to draughts. Their nimble fingers move pieces with precision, each move calculated. Across time and continents, the spirit unites people from all walks of life. Five American soldiers in uniform find solace in the familiar click-clack sound as they engage in friendly competition during their downtime. Joseph Clark's masterpiece painting "The Draughts Players" captures the intensity and focus on players' faces as they strategize their next moves. The scene is reminiscent of ancient times when even Egyptian pharaohs played this timeless game - depicted vividly on Plate 7 of the Book of the Dead. From Somalia to Cheltnam, Somali warriors and skilled craftsmen alike gather around wooden boards adorned with black-and-white squares.
