A comic postcard from the 20th century: Women in their finest attire pause to discuss the dissipated man stumbling in the street, a scene reminiscent of the last century's engravings. From "How I joined the Hundred-and-Fiftieth," we learn of the dangers of such habits, as depicted in the engraving of the dissipated Charon of Athens. Dandies like Lord Petersham and the Suckling Roaring Boys of the 17th century, immortalized in their engravings, also succumbed to the allure of excess. Even as far back as the 1600s, the Choice Spirit & Buck and German drinkers of the 18th century were known for their debauchery.
