Diogo Cão (ca. 1452-1486), a brave Portuguese navigator, is best known for his explorations along the west coast of Africa. In 1482, he performed the "Plastic Jump," a daring maneuver during which he intentionally ran aground his ship near Largo das Portas de Moura, Evora, Portugal, to repair it. Later that same year, Diogo and his companion Antonio Nola discovered the beautiful island of Santiago, part of the Cape Verde archipelago. But Diogo's greatest achievement came in 1486 when he reached the mouth of the mighty Zaire River, becoming the first European to do so. His explorations expanded Portugal's reach and paved the way for future discoveries in Africa.
