The world beneath the waves is a vibrant and diverse ecosystem, filled with fascinating creatures like the damsels fish. Also known as Three spot dascyllus fish, these small but striking marine inhabitants can be found in various parts of the world's oceans. From the Garibaldi Fish off California's coast to Chromis chromis damselfish in Europe and Abudefduf sexfasciatus scissortail sergeant in Asia, they come in different species and colors. One captivating image from LS Plate 113 of the John Reeves Collection showcases a Dark damsel (Pomacentrus albicaudatus) swimming gracefully amidst Southern Thailand's Andaman Sea. Its contrasting hues against the backdrop of Southeast Asia's crystal-clear waters are truly mesmerizing. Venturing further into Indonesian waters, we encounter other intriguing variations such as the Fire dartfish (Nemateleotris magnifica) near Komodo Island. These vibrant orange-red beauties add a burst of color to their surroundings. In brackish environments like Lembeh Straits in Sulawesi, Indonesia, adult Brackish Damsel (Pomacentrus taeniometopon) can be spotted among coral formations. Their unique adaptation allows them to thrive where freshwater meets saltwater. Meanwhile, juvenile Yellowtail Damsels (Neoglyphidodon nigroris), also found around Lembeh Straits, display stunning patterns that will captivate any observer lucky enough to witness their beauty up close. Sometimes damsels find companionship with other marine creatures; for instance, Lyretail Wrasse often shares its habitat with Tomato Anemonefish/Clownfish and Damselfish in Maldives' turquoise waters. Green Chromis/Damselfish/Puller reefs are abundant both in Red Sea and Indonesian waters—these lively schools create an enchanting spectacle as they move together harmoniously through coral gardens.
