The crossbowman, a formidable warrior armed with the deadly weapon known as the crossbow, has played a significant role throughout history. From ancient battles to medieval conflicts and beyond, these soldiers of Acostamientos have left their mark on numerous historical events. In an engraving by Serra, based on a 14th-century codex, we catch a glimpse of the skilled crossbowman in action. His steady hand and focused gaze speak volumes about his expertise in handling this powerful weapon. One such pivotal moment in history where crossbowmen proved their worth was during the Battle of Covadonga in 722. As part of the Spanish forces fighting against Moorish invaders, these warriors displayed exceptional bravery and skill that ultimately led to victory. Moving forward through time, we find ourselves at a grand banquet hosted by the Amsterdam Civic Guard. Amongst the esteemed guests are culveriners and crossbowmen who are being celebrated for their contributions to society's safety and security. The Crusades also witnessed the involvement of courageous crossbowmen. During the Seventh Crusade's Siege of Damietta in June (year), they stood side by side with fellow soldiers, defending their cause with unwavering determination. Not limited to battlefields alone, even gentlemen from noble courts like Sigismund, Emperor of Germany in the 15th century recognized and appreciated these skilled archers' prowess. Their presence added an air of sophistication amidst courtly affairs. Artistic depictions further immortalize these warriors' legacy. The Master of Playing Cards beautifully portrays Saint Sebastian as a symbol of strength and resilience while wielding his trusty crossbow dating back to the 15th century. Andries Stock's painting "The Archer and Milkmaid" transports us to early 17th-century rural life where even common folk embraced archery skills for hunting or self-defense purposes - showcasing how deeply ingrained this art had become within society.
