A journey through time: Council homes in Birmingham and Newcastle, 1960s-1970s. From the Tower block near Guildford Street in Lozells (18th July, 1968) to the Byker Wall in Newcastle Upon Tyne (1974), council homes shaped the urban landscape. In Birmingham, Stoneycroft Tower (at the junction of Bromford Drive and Chipperfield Road) and Brooks Tower in Newtown (15th December, 1975) rose high, while Kingshurst Hall, a 17th century moated hall, stood derelict and soon to be demolished (2nd November, 1964). The recently completed second stage of Nechells Green Parkway (Nechells, Birmingham) and Duddeston tower blocks (Duddeston Manor Road) marked progress. Val de Travers Ltd, who have worked on the London County Council Estate and the London projects, were part of this transformative era.
