A collapsed lung, also known as pneumothorax, is a medical emergency that occurs when air accumulates in the pleural cavity, causing the lung to collapse. This condition can lead to breathing difficulties and, if left untreated, can be life-threatening. An X-ray is the most common diagnostic tool used to identify a collapsed lung. There are several types of pneumothorax, including tension pneumothorax, which is a more severe form that requires immediate treatment. In an X-ray of a pneumothorax (C017 / 7148), an air collection is visible in the pleural space, pushing the lung away from the chest wall. Another type, called a simple pneumothorax (C017 / 7812), shows a smaller air collection without signs of tension. A cross-sectional artwork (C016 / 6569) can also help visualize the collapsed lung and the accumulation of air in the pleural space. An X-ray of a collapsed lung (C017 / 7966) can confirm the diagnosis and guide treatment, which may include chest tube insertion to drain the air from the pleural cavity.
