Central Turkey, a land steeped in history and rich with cultural significance. It all began with the foundation of Constantinople by Emperor Constantine the Great, who saw fit to transfer the imperial capital to Byzantium and rename it Constantinople. This momentous event marked a turning point in history, shaping the destiny of this region for centuries to come. In the midst of this historical tapestry lies Scutari, where we witness the somber Funeral of Captain Selby, RN, in the British Cemetery. The engraving captures both the solemnity and reverence bestowed upon those who have served their country with honor. Turkish troops embarking on a journey to fight in the Russo-Turkish War depict bravery and sacrifice as they leave behind loved ones and embark on an uncertain path towards victory or defeat. Their courage echoes through time as we remember their valiant efforts. The Orient Express Railway Line from Paris to Constantinople stands as a testament to human ingenuity and ambition. A series by Chocolat d'Aiguebelle showcases this remarkable feat of engineering that connected distant lands and cultures. Amidst tales of war and conquest comes a reminder of beauty found within Central Turkey's borders. A jug adorned with flowers against a fish-scale background transports us back to 1530-1550 when artistry flourished under Ottoman rule. Panoramic views overlooking Istanbul and its iconic Bosphorus bridge take us back to c. 1890 when photography captured moments frozen in time forevermore. We marvel at how much has changed yet remained unchanged over generations. A dish adorned with leaves and flowers from the 16th century serves as another reminder that amidst turmoil, life continues its delicate dance – an ode to resilience even during trying times. But not all stories end happily; Death lurks even amidst triumphs. Turkish soldiers defeated not by enemy forces but by cholera serve as a stark reminder that fate can be cruel and unpredictable.
