"Capitello: A Journey Through Time and Symbolism" Step into the world of capitello, where ancient stories and intricate carvings come to life. In the 12th century Cloister of the Benedectine monastery, Lazarus lies on his deathbed, as depicted in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The Western side of capital N8 tells a tale of contrasting fates - while the soul of the poor man ascends to heaven with Abraham, the rich man must face his sins in fiery damnation. Venturing further into Genoa's Duomo, inside its majestic nave, we encounter captivating sculptures by Campionese sculptor known as Master of the Angels. One capital portrays symbols of Evangelists on St John's side, transporting us back to 1307. Another capital reveals itself on St Luke's side, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship from centuries past. As we travel through time and space, Rome beckons with its iconic arches and structures. The Arch of Titus stands tall against a backdrop that includes none other than the Colosseum itself – a testament to Rome's grandeur during its heyday. In more modern times, Guglielmo Calderini oversaw construction work on Rome's Palace of Justice between 1889-1911. This monumental project captured both architectural prowess and historical significance. Returning to antiquity once again, Corinthian capitals dating back to Roman times grace our path between northern nave and main sections – silent witnesses to an era long gone but not forgotten. The journey continues beyond Rome’s borders; Bologna showcases Palazzo Legnani Pizzardi’s courtyard adorned with elegant colonnades reminiscent of classical beauty. Nearby stands another architectural gem –the Portal of College Spain– inviting us into a world steeped in academia and culture. Finally arriving at Monreale Cathedral’s cloister in Italy brings tranquility amidst stunning architecture.
