"Ca 1530–60: A Visual Journey through Psyche's Trials and Triumphs" This collection of drawings, prints, and plates from the 16th century takes us on a captivating journey into the world of Psyche. Female personifications of sorrow and pain are depicted with striking detail, reminding us of the right to punish those who have wronged us. One print showcases Psyche's encounter with her sisters as they persuade her to uncover Cupid's true identity while he sleeps beside her in serpent form. This story unfolds further in Plate 32, where Cupid and Psyche find themselves on their nuptial bed, recalling the tale told by Apuleius. In another print, Proserpine is seen giving Psyche a box containing beauty - an integral part of her story as Cupid had warned against opening it. Venus herself appears in a dove-drawn chariot complaining to Jupiter about this mortal love affair that has accompanied so much turmoil. A frieze-like arrangement captures our attention next, featuring putti wearing laurel crowns and riding alongside one another. Their presence adds an ethereal touch to these drawings and prints. Nymphs take center stage in another scene as they delicately dress Psyche's hair. The story continues with Olympian gods gathering for a grand marriage feast between Cupid and Psyche - an event immortalized by Raphael himself. Plate 3 introduces us to Psyches two sisters who have married kings while she stands alone on the left side accompanied only by her thoughts. This contrast highlights both her strength and vulnerability. The underworld beckons in yet another drawing as we witness Psyche entering its depths bearing offerings for Cerberus. The subsequent print shows her telling her sisters about misfortunes she encountered there - tales that leave them falling off their seats in disbelief. Finally, Plate 5 presents a serene image of Psyche seated atop a mountain surrounded by a musical troupe.
