In the year 1626, a sailing ship named Aemilia embarked on a remarkable journey across the vast oceans. On board, Richard Cromwell, an adventurous soul seeking new horizons and untold treasures. As they sailed towards uncharted lands, little did they know that this year would mark significant events in history. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away from the high seas, Peter Minuit, a Dutch colonial official in America, made a groundbreaking purchase. In 1626, he acquired Manhattan Island from its indigenous inhabitants for trinkets worth just sixty guilders. This transaction would shape the future of one of the world's most iconic cities. During this time period, art flourished with Alfred Fredericks capturing Minuit's historic moment on canvas. His painting immortalized the scene as Minuit negotiated with Native Americans against a backdrop of natural beauty and cultural exchange. In England, John Aubrey documented intriguing tales about Lord Francis Bacon and his intellectual pursuits during this eventful year. Meanwhile, Johann Schweikhard showcased his craftsmanship through an exquisite set of thirteen Apostles Spoons engraved in 1626 - each spoon telling its own story. Richard Cromwell (WL), not to be confused with his famous father Oliver Cromwell who ruled later on as Lord Protector of England after overthrowing King Charles I during the English Civil War; played his part in shaping history too. Though less known than his father's reign as ruler or even Richard III before him; Richard Cromwell had his own unique experiences aboard Aemilia. As political tensions simmered across Europe and beyond; King Charles I ascended to power amidst grandeur at his coronation ceremony while Juan van der Hamen y painted portraits capturing society's diversity including "Portrait of a Dwarf" circa 1626 - reminding us that beauty comes in all forms. Back on land near York Stairs along River Thames; plans were underway for architectural marvels like the building depicted in an engraving.
