The 11th and 12th centuries were a time of great artistic and cultural achievements. In Santo Domingo de la Calzada, the mausoleum of the Spanish hermit stands as a testament to his devotion and legacy. The relief on his tomb depicts the life and miracles of this revered figure. Meanwhile, in the Beatus of Turin, an illuminated manuscript from that era, we find a captivating miniature titled "The Ark of the Covenant and the Beast. " This intricate artwork showcases biblical scenes with stunning detail. Another remarkable piece from this period is found in a beautifully decorated letter known as Letter I. Illuminated with figurations of Jesus Christ's bust and an evangelist, it exemplifies the religious fervor that characterized these times. Biblical references were also meticulously framed within a table of concordance in manuscripts like Missale Parvum. These sacred texts written on parchment served as guides for religious ceremonies during that period. Artisans showcased their skills through tapestries such as "Tapestry of Creation, " where March is depicted in vibrant colors. Additionally, Hispano-Arab silk weavers used bow looms to create exquisite fabrics like the one seen in the fabric adorned with green eagles at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. However, not all was peaceful during this time. The Battle between Crusaders and pagan troops near Aleppo serves as a reminder of conflicts fought for religious dominance across different lands. Moving back to Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, its Platerias facade tells stories through various reliefs: one depicting Adam and Eve's expulsion from paradise while another portrays a centaur—an intriguing mix between human and animal forms—symbolizing mythical creatures prevalent in medieval art. Standards played an important role during battles or processions; Saint Odon's standard featured figures engaged in prayer while another symbolized Saint Luke using Tetramorph—a representation combining four living creatures associated with the evangelist.
