Former island of Schokland (UNESCO World Heritage)

The former island Schokland is a symbol of the traditional Dutch struggle against the water. Schokland lost its status as an island when the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed from the sea in 1942. The remains are still visible as a slightly elevated part in the polder. A major flood in 1825 brought massive destruction, and in 1859 the government decided to end permanent settlement on Schokland. Today Schokland is a popular archeological site and host to the Schokland Museum. Schokland was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Netherlands

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the former island of Schokland, a powerful symbol of the traditional Dutch struggle against water. Once an independent island, Schokland lost its status when the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed from the sea in 1942. However, remnants of its rich history can still be seen as a slightly elevated part within the polder. The image serves as a reminder of the devastating flood that struck in 1825, causing immense destruction and leading to the government's decision to cease permanent settlement on Schokland in 1859. Today, this remarkable site has become a popular destination for archaeology enthusiasts and is home to the renowned Schokland Museum. Schokland holds great significance as it was not only recognized as the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Netherlands but also represents an important chapter in social history. The photograph showcases elements such as charming village architecture, including houses and churches that once stood proudly on this now uninhabited land. With its uncultivated landscape adorned by wildflowers and bare trees reaching towards an expansive sky, this image beautifully encapsulates both tranquility and resilience. It invites viewers to reflect upon humanity's ongoing battle with nature while appreciating how historical sites like Schokland continue to inspire awe through their enduring presence.
