Exoplanet Kepler 1701b and its exomoon
Kepler 1780-b is a gas giant exoplanet orbiting the F-type star Kepler 1708, some 5500 light years from Earth. Orbiting at a distance of 1.64 astronomical units from its star, the planet has a mass of 4.6 times that of Jupiter but is estimated to be smaller in size. In 2021, astronomers announced the likely detection of not only the planet (yellow), but a super-sized satellite orbit around it (green), dubbed Kepler 1701-b-i. Unlike the satellites of the Solar System's planets, the exomoon is not rocky - it's gaseous, somewhat similar to the planet Neptune. Thousands of exoplanets are now known, but exomoons - although most certainly common - have mostly evaded discovery until now, because it presents a much more difficult challenge

Exoplanet Kepler 1701b and its Exomoon - A Glimpse into the Extraordinary
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the distant exoplanet Kepler 1701b and its extraordinary exomoon, Kepler 1780-b. Located a staggering 5500 light years away from Earth, this gas giant exoplanet orbits the F-type star Kepler 1708 in a mesmerizing dance of celestial bodies. With a mass approximately 4.6 times that of Jupiter, yet estimated to be smaller in size, Kepler 1701b has intrigued astronomers since its discovery. However, it was not until recently that scientists made an astonishing revelation - the likely detection of a super-sized satellite orbiting around it. Dubbed Kepler 1701-b-i, this green-hued exomoon defies our expectations by being gaseous rather than rocky like most satellites within our own Solar System. Its resemblance to Neptune adds another layer of intrigue to this already enigmatic system. While thousands of exoplanets have been discovered thus far, the existence of exomoons has remained elusive due to their challenging nature. This groundbreaking finding sheds light on their commonality throughout the universe and opens up new possibilities for further exploration and understanding. Mark Garlick's masterful capture transports us to uncharted territories beyond our reach but within our imagination. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring image, we are reminded once again of the vastness and beauty that lies beyond our familiar skies
